Bartimaeus teaches us many lessons. He has deep faith; knows his own poverty and also knows Jesus’ power. He accepts his own dark blind world; believes that Jesus can restore his sight and bring him back into the light. This is the first condition of prayer: to know who we are and to know who Jesus is. Like Bartimaeus, once, we could see.
But we become blind. We are blinded by pride, prejudice, passion. Healing begins when we accept and acknowledge our need. “What will you have me do for you?” Jesus asks. There is wisdom in that simple question. Jesus will not do for us what we do not want him to do.
