Isaiah gives the sign of a young woman giving birth to preserve the continuity of the rule of the dynasty of David in Judah. The full realization of the prediction is actualized in the birth of Jesus, the one who is truly Emmanuel: God with us and whose rule will never come to an end. Jesus, though divine, became one with us in everything except sin. Jesus is one who saves because he is divine. As we approach Christmas, the readings highlight the events preceding Jesus’ birth and Church wants us to meditate on God’s mysterious intervention in favour of humanity. It is the fulfilment of prophecies and the expectations of the people for centuries. How well prepared are we to receive the precious gift of God to the world – the Saviour? Like Joseph we need to surrender completely before the unfathomable mysteries of God.
