The spiritual and personal encounter of Simeon and Anna with the Child Jesus in the Temple provide us with many lessons. It was their life of unconditional faith in God and dedication to prayer and fasting that enabled them to recognize the Messiah. It’s a reminder that prayer and contemplation are not merely a waste of time but essential ingredients to cultivating a lasting relationship with God. Those who pray and offer sacrifices and to penance are open to the movements of the Spirit in their life. Such persons will know how to recognize the Lord who manifest himself in the various circumstances of life. On this day of consecrated Life, we do well to remember all consecrated persons—men and women—who have given themselves to God, both in the active and the contemplative way of life.
